The minute the interview was over, he knew Andrew Duthie was right for the job.
"I came away just excited that Andrew was not only qualified," says Alan Selwyn, "but he had all the leadership attributes that would serve Duthie Associates extremely well into the future."
Selwyn was hired by Bob Duthie, Andrew's father, to help him create a succession plan for his business, Duthie Associates Inc. (Related) Duthie Associates Inc.
Though Andrew was working for DaimlerChrysler (Related) in Detroit at the time, Selwyn saw the interest and entrepreneurial aptitude necessary for taking Duthie Associates' reins.
"And here I am," says Andrew, now the company's president.
Duthie Associates creates custom, Web-based training courses and interactive sales presentations for companies. It has worked with businesses such as HCA (Related) HCA , Caterpillar Financial (Related) , Corrections Corp. of America (Related) Corrections Corp. of America and the U.S. Military Health System.
For example, the company created a detailed training program - 30 courses over three years - for HCA's employee training library on topics such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance.
Bob founded the business in 1989 after working as vice president of business development for Nortel Networks (Related) .
Near the end of his career at Nortel, Bob realized emerging computer technology could be used to train employees whenever, wherever they are. But because the business plan didn't fit into Nortel's model, he decided to break away with the idea.
Nortel was one of his first clients.
Andrew joined the business in 2000, leaving his position as supplier quality engineer for DaimlerChrysler after his interview with Selwyn.
The idea was for Andrew to spend three years as a regular employee, and if he still wanted to stay, he could begin buying into the company.
