Although the arches are uniform along the wall, this particular arch with steps is thought to have been the doorway for sick and elderly monks to enter the church from the near-by abbey infirmary.
Of course the church was the most important building of any abbey. The Cistercian monks at Rievaulx followed the rules of St. Benedict and worshipped in the church eight times daily. The times varied depending on the time of year, but in summer, the first service would have been at 2am and the last one at 8pm. In winter the first service would be at 3:30am and the last one at 6:15pm. The lay brothers, who did most of the manual work, were allowed to worship fewer times.

Hi Kath,
Beautiful symetry in the arches. Like the repeating effect in this good seen vertical composition. Some might say a human element would be nice, but for me such places work better without them.
